Lincoln & District Model Railway Club was originally founded in 1977.
The Club met at the Sherwood Scout Hut on Furnace Road, in the district of the city called Stamp End.
With an original membership of just 5, the chairman was Mr. Ron Harris and the local area provided the majority of it’s membership.
A lack of space for both layouts and members meant them leaving their original Club House in 1979 and going on to set up in The Methodist Church Hall in North Hykeham, where they stayed for the next 9 years.
The club then moved again to it’s current home at The Village Hall in Aisthorpe, which has a much larger Multi Purpose building used by a number of Societies and Interest Groups. This building is ideally situated and very well equipped to host Shows and Exhibitions and also benefits from it’s own on-site catering facilities, car parking and reasonably good public transport links.

Today, we are excited to announce that DeepSeek R1 distilled Llama and Qwen models are available through Amazon Bedrock Marketplace and Amazon SageMaker JumpStart. With this launch, you can now deploy DeepSeek AI’s first-generation frontier design, DeepSeek-R1, along with the distilled versions varying from 1.5 to 70 billion specifications to construct, experiment, and responsibly scale your generative AI concepts on AWS.
In this post, we demonstrate how to get going with DeepSeek-R1 on Amazon Bedrock Marketplace and SageMaker JumpStart. You can follow comparable actions to release the distilled variations of the models also.
Overview of DeepSeek-R1
DeepSeek-R1 is a large language model (LLM) established by DeepSeek AI that uses reinforcement finding out to boost reasoning abilities through a multi-stage training procedure from a DeepSeek-V3-Base foundation. A key identifying feature is its support learning (RL) action, which was used to fine-tune the design’s responses beyond the standard pre-training and tweak procedure. By including RL, DeepSeek-R1 can adapt better to user feedback and goals, eventually improving both importance and clearness. In addition, DeepSeek-R1 uses a chain-of-thought (CoT) technique, indicating it’s equipped to break down complicated questions and factor through them in a detailed way. This directed thinking process permits the model to produce more precise, transparent, and detailed responses. This model integrates RL-based fine-tuning with CoT abilities, aiming to produce structured reactions while concentrating on interpretability and user interaction. With its wide-ranging capabilities DeepSeek-R1 has actually recorded the market’s attention as a versatile text-generation model that can be integrated into numerous workflows such as representatives, rational reasoning and data analysis tasks.
DeepSeek-R1 uses a Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture and is 671 billion specifications in size. The MoE architecture permits activation of 37 billion parameters, enabling effective inference by routing inquiries to the most pertinent specialist “clusters.” This technique allows the model to concentrate on different problem domains while maintaining overall efficiency. DeepSeek-R1 requires a minimum of 800 GB of HBM memory in FP8 format for reasoning. In this post, we will utilize an ml.p5e.48 xlarge instance to deploy the model. ml.p5e.48 xlarge features 8 Nvidia H200 GPUs providing 1128 GB of GPU memory.
DeepSeek-R1 distilled models bring the thinking capabilities of the main R1 design to more efficient architectures based on popular open designs like Qwen (1.5 B, 7B, 14B, and 32B) and Llama (8B and 70B). Distillation refers to a process of training smaller sized, more efficient models to imitate the behavior and thinking patterns of the bigger DeepSeek-R1 design, utilizing it as a teacher design.
You can release DeepSeek-R1 model either through SageMaker JumpStart or Bedrock Marketplace. Because DeepSeek-R1 is an emerging design, we recommend deploying this design with guardrails in location. In this blog, we will use Amazon Bedrock Guardrails to present safeguards, avoid harmful content, and assess models against crucial safety criteria. At the time of writing this blog site, for DeepSeek-R1 releases on SageMaker JumpStart and Bedrock Marketplace, Bedrock Guardrails supports just the ApplyGuardrail API. You can develop numerous guardrails tailored to different use cases and use them to the DeepSeek-R1 design, enhancing user experiences and standardizing safety controls throughout your generative AI applications.
Prerequisites
To release the DeepSeek-R1 design, you need access to an ml.p5e circumstances. To examine if you have quotas for P5e, open the Service Quotas console and under AWS Services, choose Amazon SageMaker, and verify you’re utilizing ml.p5e.48 xlarge for endpoint use. Make certain that you have at least one ml.P5e.48 xlarge instance in the AWS Region you are deploying. To ask for a limitation boost, create a limitation boost demand and connect to your account group.
Because you will be deploying this design with Amazon Bedrock Guardrails, make certain you have the correct AWS Identity and Gain Access To Management (IAM) approvals to utilize Amazon Bedrock Guardrails. For instructions, see Set up permissions to use guardrails for material filtering.
Implementing guardrails with the ApplyGuardrail API
Amazon Bedrock Guardrails permits you to present safeguards, avoid damaging material, and examine models against crucial safety criteria. You can carry out safety steps for the DeepSeek-R1 model utilizing the Amazon Bedrock ApplyGuardrail API. This enables you to apply guardrails to examine user inputs and design actions deployed on Amazon Bedrock Marketplace and SageMaker JumpStart. You can create a guardrail utilizing the Amazon Bedrock console or the API. For the example code to develop the guardrail, see the GitHub repo.
The basic flow includes the following actions: First, the system gets an input for the model. This input is then processed through the ApplyGuardrail API. If the input passes the guardrail check, it’s sent out to the design for reasoning. After getting the design’s output, another guardrail check is applied. If the output passes this last check, it’s returned as the result. However, if either the input or output is intervened by the guardrail, a message is returned indicating the nature of the intervention and whether it happened at the input or output stage. The examples showcased in the following areas demonstrate inference using this API.

Optionally, you can set up sophisticated security and infrastructure settings, consisting of virtual personal cloud (VPC) networking, service role permissions, and file encryption settings. For most utilize cases, the default settings will work well. However, for production releases, you might desire to examine these settings to line up with your company’s security and compliance requirements.
7. Choose Deploy to start utilizing the model.
When the implementation is total, you can check DeepSeek-R1’s capabilities straight in the Amazon Bedrock play area.
8. Choose Open in play ground to access an interactive user interface where you can experiment with different triggers and adjust model specifications like temperature and maximum length.
When utilizing R1 with Bedrock’s InvokeModel and Playground Console, use DeepSeek’s chat template for ideal outcomes. For example, content for reasoning.
This is an excellent method to explore the design’s thinking and text generation abilities before integrating it into your applications. The play area supplies instant feedback, assisting you understand how the design reacts to different inputs and letting you fine-tune your triggers for ideal results.
You can quickly evaluate the design in the play ground through the UI. However, to invoke the deployed model programmatically with any Amazon Bedrock APIs, you need to get the endpoint ARN.
